Miss Sara J. Matthews
Miss Matthews has one of the broadest experiences of all consultants in the UK in the field of Fertility Medicine, having worked in a number of the largest, most established and highly regarded fertility units in the country.
"I fell in love with Gynaecology as soon as I started my undergraduate training back in the 80s at Queens University in Belfast. I moved away from the idea of being a general surgeon, and started to concentrate on one of the most challenging roles for a woman in medicine, but I have never regretted the hard work, sweat and tears that accompany years of training and long hours in my chosen profession, because I still enjoy every minute, and hopefully that is reflected in the expert specialist care I give to my patients."
Miss Matthews has trained with the Lord Sir Robert Winston
at Hammersmith Hospital, then at St James’ Hospital and The General
Infirmary in Leeds, at the Bourn Hall Clinic and Addenbrookes Hospital
in Cambridgeshire, Isis Fertility Centre in Colchester, and at the
Bridge Centre, and the Centre for Reproductive Medicine (CRM), in
London.
Miss Matthews is currently the Medical Director of the Homerton Foundation University NHS Hospital Trust Assisted Conception Unit in North East London.
Miss Matthews also trained in psychiatric medicine, and in Genito-Urinary medicine (including the diploma course of the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Disease MSSVD). She is a qualified Forensic Medical Officer (trained in the assessment and care of rape victims), and is certified as an advanced laparoscopic surgeon (RCOG MASII).
Miss Matthews is involved in the training and formal examination of junior gynaecologists, and the assessment of new subspecialist consultants in the field of fertility. She has been a tutor for the medical students at Cambridge University, and is occasionally involved in TV and radio coverage of topical fertility issues, and as an author of several women’s magazine articles related to gynaecology.
