This new laboratory technique may double the chance of pregnancy and
significantly reduce the risk of miscarriage for couples who need ICSI
(a form of IVF treatment used for couples where there is a major sperm
problem). Sperm are observed under the microscope at a magnification 15
times more powerful than ordinary ICSI. This permits the selection of
much better sperm to use for fertilising the eggs, as subtle
abnormalities can now be identified, and it may lower the risk of an
abnormal pregnancy.
